Roberto De Lujo
composer
Roberto de Lujo is a pseudonym of a composer, who can neither read nor write notes, with only modest talent for playing musical instruments. His musical ears and feeling compensate a lot.
His actual experience as a musician on stage does not go any further than being the drummer of the school band during the late 60’s/early 70’s. During the same period he developed a keen interest in jazz, especially smooth Latin jazz. After all, this was the period after the world wide breakthrough of Bossa Nova tunes under the leadership of people like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Sergio Mendes. His personal experience working with great songwriters such as Ivan Lins, by many regarded as the successor to Jobim, inspired him to start composing. This was triggered very much by his partner in music Roeland Jacobs, nephew of the late Pim Jacobs, a renowned Dutch jazz pianist who was married to “Europe’s first lady of Jazz” Rita Reys.
His ‘discovery’ of Antonio Serrano, a very gifted harmonica player mainly operating in his native country Spain, opened the way for a close cooperation. Together with the extremely talented Leonardo Amuedo from Uruguay he performed Roberto de Lujo’s first composition “Café Au Laye” in 2009. This song was recorded for the CD “Rosa”, a largely instrumental tribute to great Latin sounds, on which Ivan Lins made several guest appearances. The result of this cooperation was the initiative for yet another CD, “Intimate” this time featuring Ivan Lins himself, on which both Leonardo Amuedo and Antonio Serrano made contributions on their turn. This was a big international production with recordings in The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, USA and South Africa. The CD was released in The Netherlands, Portugal and Brazil in 2010 and in Spain a Spanish version was released in 2012.
In 2015 he released the CD "Neither Here Nor There". Fifteen of his own compositions saw the light (albeit one was written together with Ivan Lins) on a CD of which the proceeds would all go to charity. Ivan Lins, Antonio Serrano, Thijs van Leer, Mike Boddé and many others participated in this successful project.
In 2016 he took the initiative for a new CD "Pop Meets Bossa". Recordings have started during the spring of 2017 for a CD whereby popsongs from predominantly the Sixties and Seventies, that already had a bossa or bossa-like rhythm on the original version, are further "Brazilianised". Contrary to his previous CD, vocalists will play a large part in this project. The likes of Fay Claassen, Shirma Rouse, Rene van Kooten, Lilian Vieira, Bernice van Leer and Lodewijk van Gorp will participate on this CD. The CD contains 11 covers and one new composition.
The CD has meanwhile been released during February 2018 and is called The Latin Edge Of Pop. It is the firm intention to produce a successor, The Latin Edge Of Pop II, during 2019.
